Family Promise of Greater Houston County (FPGHC)
FamilyPromise2

Family Promise is a new initiative in the Greater Houston County Area.  First Christian Church is thrilled to be one of the thirteen host churches needed for this ministry, but we still need more host congregations in the area (see the list below for further needs).  There is not yet a website dedicated to our local chapter, but, for more information on this powerful ministry, click here for the Family Promise Website.

A mother loses her job, a father is kept from working by an injury, a family is forced from their home by fire or natural disaster.  Healthcare costs soar, public transportation is underfunded, affordable housing is almost impossible to find.  These are the reasons why families now make up 40 percent of the homeless population, and why one out of every four homeless people is a child.

In response to this crisis, the Family Promise Network brings various faith communities together to help families regain their housing, their independence, and their dignity.  FPGHC is a collaborative partnership of congregations within our community helping families with infants, toddlers, and children in our schools who are facing homelessness.  This proven hospitality program offers a rewarding opportunity for volunteers of all faiths, ages, and abilities to be active in transforming lives.

NEEDS TO MAKE THIS MINISTRY HAPPEN:

13 HOST CONGREGATIONS -- We need commitment letters from 13 congregations to be hosts for these families before we start the program.

DAY CENTER -- The Day Center is the hub from which all the Host Congregations revolve, and is a critical requirement, which should be in place soon.

FUNDS -- Experienced Networks recommend having one third of the first year budget of $125,000  in our accounts to begin.  Contributions will be TAX-DEDUCTIBLE.

WASHER & DRYER -- Since it is not mandatory to have a washer & dryer at each church, it is necessary to have them at the day center.

BEDS & NIGHT TABLES -- We need 16 to 18 roll away beds similar to the ones used in hotels. These beds and tables will be moved between Host Congregations each week.

14’ – 18’ TRUCK -- It would be great to have one vehicle that can transport all the beds and belongings.

15 - PASSENGER VAN -- A van carries the guests from Host Congregation to Day Center and to other necessary local area destinations.

14 LARGE WHEELED PLASTIC CONTAINERS -- Used to store and move the guests’ personal belongings during stays and transport between Host Congregations.

WAREHOUSING -- A space to store donated furnishings for program graduates to help them furnish their new home.

FURNISHINGS -- Good condition office/household furnishings to help start up Day Center.

VOLUNTEERS -- Provide meals; activities; Sleep over; Provide breakfast; Help with resumes; Help kids with homework; Financial counseling; Just being there for children and their families, showing them compassion and respect, and sharing a sense of community.

COMMUNITY AGENCIES -- Help in training; Qualify participants; Provide support and guidance.
